It was Big Dog Week !

Meet some of the new arrivals at the Border Collie Rescue centre near York, UK, who came in to our care between Sept 16th and 19th 2007.
The 5 members of the Border Collie clan featured in this video are from varied backgrounds and circumstances but have one thing in common - they are all BIG - between 29 and 37 kilos in weight.
This is how they came to us.

Patti - A Case History.

Patti was found as a stray Border collie tied to a caravan in County Durham and came into the Border Collie Rescue centre at a year old in April 2006.
She needed a lot of attention and socialisation before we could even start to assess her but she has plenty of the spirit and energy the breed is known for.

Blue - A Case History.

This Border Collie, Blue, was born on the Island of Taransay during the making of the original BBC TV series 'Castaway'.
He came into Border Collie Rescue care at 6 months old and is now nearly 7.
With the agreement of his old owner and new owner we are able to make his case public.

Assessments - Jamie.

Jamie, a young red merle rescue Border Collie, is shown sheep for the first time.
This is the first stage of our assessment process for all the dogs we take in.
After all, the Border Collie is first and foremost a sheepdog breed so if a dog comes into rescue for re-homing it is only right we should go to the trouble of finding out if it is happier working or happier as a pet.
Otherwise it, and its new owner, may be in for a lot of trouble.

Foot and Mouth 2001.

In 2001, Border Collie Rescue ran a unique scheme with government approval to rescue Border Collies and sheepdogs from infected farms.
Working with MAFF, and later DEFRA, under licences issued by disease control centres around the UK, we attended affected premises and disinfected and removed dogs.
This is a short record of those months.

Meet the Crew.

Border Collie Rescue enrolls the assistance of well balanced and trained dogs to help us get through to some of the less fortunate Border Collies we take in.
These are all rescue dogs that have found a permanent home (and job) helping within the organisation.
They are just as important to our work as any other volunteer.

Pan - A Case History of a blind BC.

Border Collie Rescue offers long term care for some dogs that are difficult to re-home or need more constant care.

Pan - a blind Border Collie is one of these.

Initially, she was found a permenant home but the couple split up. Not wishing her to have to risk such an occurence again, it was decided that she should be permanently fostered and remain under our close supervision.

Training Gael.

At Border Collie Rescue we assess every Border Collie we take in around sheep to understand the degree of their herding drive and ability.
Those who need to work livestock are re-homed to be a sheepdog and those who dont can go as companions.
To keep the sheep in order we use a trained dog we call a 'control dog'.

This video is of Gael, being trained to become our new control dog.

Puppy Walk.

Here are some pups, born at our Assessment and Re-habillitation rescue centre near York, going out for one of their many daily walks together.
Our own 10+ acres of land is supplemented by several hundred acres of surrounding farmland and farm tracks in remote countryside, allowing plenty of freedom to run and play together.
